To determine if burnout syndrome was associated with metabolic syndrome or its components, in medical and nursing staff of the critical medicine areas at Carlos Andrade Marín Hospital, in Quito. Material and Methods: Cross-sectional descriptive research carried out between December 2017 and July 2018. The Maslach test (MBI – HSS) was used and the metabolic syndrome criteria were applied. Results: The sample included 258 intensive care and emergency physicians and nurses. About 28,3% (n = 73) of them presented burnout syndrome, 7,4% in its severe form, while metabolic syndrome was found in 22,9% (n = 59). The difference in metabolic syndrome rates between the groups with and without SAP was - 3.3%, with OR 0.8 (95% CI 0.4; 1.6; p = 0.577). In the multivariate analysis by logistic regression, the diagnosis of burnout syndrome did not modify the association of presenting metabolic syndrome, except in nurses with an adjusted OR 16.24 (95% CI 1.66 - 158.76; p = 0, 02). There was an association between burnout and increase in abdominal circumference, when adjusted for the rest of the variables, in those over 44 years old (ORadj 5.36, 95% CI 1.23 - 23.39, p = 0.02) and low personal accomplishment with metabolic syndrome in the 25 to 44-year-old group (OR 2.99 95% CI 1.21 - 7.41, p = 0.03). Conclusions: No association was found between burnout syndrome and metabolic syndrome; in nurses, it is associated by adjusting for the rest of the variables, as well as between increased abdominal circumference in middle-aged adults. Low personal accomplishment is associated with MS in young adults.
