Background: Dyspepsia is a common gastrointestinal disorder, with prevalences that vary from population to population. Among college students, medical students have several risk factors that could cause a high prevalence of dyspepsia. However, there are no systematic reviews of the prevalence of dyspepsia in medical students. Objectives: To estimate the prevalence of non-organic dyspepsia in medical students, both globally and by sex. Methods: A systematic review was carried out searching the databases: PubMed, Global Index Medicus and EMBASE, until May 2021. Cross-sectional and cohort studies were included that reported the prevalence of functional or non-investigated dyspepsia in medical students. Dyspepsia was defined based on the diagnostic criteria of the questionnaires used in each study. A meta-analysis of the global prevalence and by sex was performed using Stata v14. Results: From 2778 records, 9 studies were selected, including 5,359 students. The global prevalence of dyspepsia found when performing the meta-analysis was 22% (95% CI: 16-28%); in women, 25% (95% CI: 17-33%); and in men, 17% (95% CI: 9-25%). High heterogeneity was found between the prevalences of the primary studies that could be explained by the use of different diagnostic criteria. Conclusions: A prevalence of 22% was found, although may not be representative, predominantly in the female sex. Therefore, it is recommended to propose strategies to reduce risk factors in students of this university career.
