The city of Lima is recognized as one of the most polluted cities in Latin America due to the high concentrations of PM2.5, being the Lima North and Lima East areas those that exceed the Environmental Quality Standard recognized by WHO (25 μg / m³) and MINAM (50 μg / m³), pollutant associated with respiratory, cardiovascular, neurological diseases, cancer; even adverse effects on pregnancy. The objective of this study was to determine the association between fetal death and exposure to PM2.5 in pregnant women residing in the 43 districts of Metropolitan Lima, treated at the Hospital San Bartolomé and the Hospital Santa Rosa during the period from 2010 to 2016 aimed to demonstrate difference between North Lima with other places of Metropolitan Lima. The present investigation is an ecological study of multiple groups with information from the Perinatal Computer System of both Hospitals, while the daily concentrations of PM2.5 were obtained from the estimates of advanced statistical models for the 43 districts of Lima. The city of Lima was classified in 4 areas: North Lima Norte, South Lima South, Center Lima and East Lima. Using a conditional logistic regression model, the association between fetal death and PM2.5 was evaluated, finding in the first and third trimester an OR = 0.97 (CI95%: 0.92-1.00) (p>0.05) and in the second trimester an OR = 0.96 (CI95%: 0.92-1.01) (p>0.05), and by including other variables such as maternal age, prenatal control, anemia, preeclampsia and obesity, statistically significant associations between stillbirth and PM2.5 were also not observed. Pregnant women from the Lima North and East areas with greater exposure to PM2.5 did not show a higher rate of fetal death (p> 0.05). In conclusion, the results show that there is no association between exposure to PM2.5 and fetal death in Metropolitan Lima.
