Background: Migraine is the most disabling primary headache. Some studies have explored the effect of music therapy in reducing the severity and duration of migraine, which reported that it could help improve it. However, there is still little evidence in this regard. Objective: To evaluate the efficacy of music therapy as a treatment or adjuvant of migraine. Materials and methods: A systematic search was carried out in PubMed, Ovid and Embase. Three authors independently selected studies with corresponding eligibility criteria. The following were extracted: sociodemographic data of the participants, characteristics of the interventions and outcomes of interest. A metaanalysis was developed on the effect of music therapy on headache intensity, the standardized mean difference (SMD) and the 95% confidence interval (95% CI) were estimated. In addition, the risk of bias was assessed. Results: Three articles met the inclusion criteria. Two included children and/or adolescents and another, adults as well. The type of intervention varied between studies. Meta-analysis of two studies regarding intensity improvement did not show a significant difference between music therapy and placebo [SMD: -0.02; 95% CI (-0.40, 0.37)]. The outcomes for frequency and associated complaints did not show a significant difference in individual studies. Conclusions: No significant difference was shown between the use of music therapy versus placebo in patients with migraine. It is suggested to carry out more studies given the importance and impact caused by this pathology.
