Objective: Obstructive Sleep Apnea Hypopnea Syndrome (OSAHS) negatively impairs the health-related quality of life (HRQoL). There is controversy about the separate existence of Upper Airway Resistance Syndrome (UARS) as a sleep breathing disorder (SBD), so, it is frequently undetected. Moreover, its relevance in HRQoL is scarcely known. Our goal is to assess HRQoL in patients with UARS comparing with OSAHS and the general population (GP). Methods: Retrospective analytic study of medical registries and polysomnography records from 2009-2014 in a center of sleep medicine. UARS was defined as AHI < 5, oxygen saturation >/= 92%, respiratory effort related arousals (RERAs) >/=5, RERAS >50% of respiratory events. HRQoL was assessed with the SF-36v1 validated in Peru. Correlation and multiple regressions were analyzed. The HRQoL from GP was obtained from a population-based survey. Results: 888 records were selected, 93 (10.5%) UARS and 795 (89.5%) OSAHS. They had 5.5 y 6.2 times higher probability of a low HRQoL score than GP, respectively. No difference was found comparing UARS to OSAHS., as adjusted for age, socioeconomic status and sex. For UARS patients, age, female gender, psychotropic drug use, obesity and depression diagnosis, showed a negatively correlation with HRQoL. Conclusion: UARS significantly impairs the HRQoL as SAHOS.
