Introduction: Overweight and obesity are entities with a high rate of therapeutic failure and high prevalence. The objective of this study was to determine the association between certain personal, family, clinical, anthropometric and laboratory factors as predictors of a favorable response in the outpatient control of overweight and obese patients who followed a nutritional weight reduction program. Methodology: Retrospective observational analytical case control study of 223 overweight and obese adult patients who attended 2 private medical and nutritional centers between 2009 and 2014. Anamnesis, anthropometric evaluation, intake survey and laboratory tests were performed. The 10-week treatment consisted of a hypocaloric diet with weekly medical-nutritional controls. Favorable weight loss was diagnosed when it was equal to or greater than 5% of the initial weight. We performed a bi and multivariate analysis of the data. Results: The age range was between 18 and 83 years old, and the average Body Mass Index (BMI) was 32.0 ± 4.6 Kg / m2. In the statistical analysis, it was found that favorable weight loss was significantly associated with having a job with an OR = 2.56 [(95% CI: 1.24 - 5.29) p = 0.011] and with having attended at least 9 of the 10 controls with an OR of 5.59 [(95% CI: 2.60 - 12.02) p <0.001]. Presenting an older age at the beginning of treatment and not having any of the parents with obesity were only significant in the bivariate analysis. No association was found with sex, marital status, childhood obesity, number and type of treatments, smoking, drinking alcohol, initial weight, body fat distribution, waist circumference, basal glycemia, HOMA-IR upper quartile and insulin. Conclusions: The association between adherence to treatment and the observed favorable weight loss becomes more important because obesity is a chronic disease. In the case of having a job, the observed association supports the importance of the socioeconomic environment as a support to better comply with the nutritional prescription and achieve success in the weight reduction treatment.
