Glacier melting and increasing intensity of ultraviolet (UV) radiation are natural conditions that are currently affecting and altering high Andean aquatic ecosystems because both factors are related to increased stress from metals. Faced with these changes the present fauna has developed defense strategies such as the development of antioxidant systems and pigmentation. In this work, the effect of metals and UV-B radiation in the community of macroinvertebrates (Gammaridae, Hirudinea, Chironomidae, Corixidae, Baetidae, Tipulidae and Muscidae) located in the Quillcay subbasin was evaluated. It was shown that the tolerance of these organisms against metals and RUV-B is related to a higher percentage of antioxidant capacity and a high concentration of melanin, which would be functioning as a defense mechanism against metallic cations, excess of Radiation and the generation of free radicals.
