Food democracy is a concept that emerged as a result of the arising concerns, problems, and the necessity to transform the food system. The paper reviews the term food democracy, beginning with a discussion of what is understood by democracy and food democracy since there are many imprecise definitions that lead to confusion. Then it distinguishes between two branches of food democracy: liberal food democracy and strong food democracy, highlighting the necessity to investigate them. The action modes associated with food democracy and the potential that each one has to democratize the food system are also analyzed. Finally, it ends with a discussion of what is the future of the food system and the need to investigate the concept in developing countries.
