Objective: To determine the association between the behavior of 3-6 year old children during dental visit and the parenting styles of their parents in hospitals in Metropolitan Lima. Materials and methods: The sample included 200 children between 3 and 6 years of age and their parents. The Parenting Styles and Dimensions Questionnaire (PSD-Q) was used to determine parenting style and the Frankl Scale was used to classify the child's behavior. The Chi-Square test and the Mann-Whitney U test were used for the association of variables. For the crude and adjusted analysis, the Poisson regression model with robust variance was used. Results: It was found that 74% of the children showed positive behavior and 85.5% of the parents had an authoritative parenting style. It was found that 91.2% of children with positive behavior had parents with authoritative parenting style. Children with authoritarian and permissive parents are 2.78 (95%CI:1.01;7.63) and 4.29 (95%CI: 2.55;7.21) times more likely to show negative behavior during dental visit, respectively, compared to those with authoritative parents. Conclusions: There is a relationship between parental parenting styles and children's behavior, during the dental visit. Children of authoritarian or permissive parents are more likely to present negative behavior, compared to children of authoritative parents.
