The rupture of a love bond is a common experience in the life of human beings, which can cause emotional imbalance and affect self-esteem (Espinoza et al., 2017; González, 2016). Likewise, overcoming such loss will depend on the style and coping strategies that each person possesses (Díaz, 2012). Given this, the present study aimed to identify the relationship between coping styles and self-esteem in students between 18 and 25 years old, who are in universities in Metropolitan Lima and who have gone through a love breakup. A total of 139 students participated, 58.60% were female and 41.40% male. A simple correlational design was employed and the abbreviated version of the Stress Coping Modes Scale (Carver, 1997) and the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (Rosenberg, 1965) were used. The results indicate that the avoidance and problem-focused coping styles are significantly correlated with self-esteem, the first style mentioned negatively and the second positively. In addition, the emotion-focused style is not linked with self-esteem. Therefore, it is concluded that college youth with higher self-esteem are more likely to have a coping style that allows them to seek specific solutions and make them concrete, while youth with lower self-esteem might avoid the problem because they feel helpless in the face of it.
