The aim of this study was to determine the effect of incorporating oregano (Origanum vulgare) as a natural additive in the diet of guinea pigs, assessing productive response, intestinal integrity, and meat quality. One hundred male guinea pigs of the "Peru" line, 14 days old, were randomly assigned to four treatments with 25 guinea pigs per treatment. Over the following six weeks, the response to four diets with different concentrations of oregano (T0: 0,05% APC, T1: 0,05% oregano, T2: 0,10% oregano, and T3: 0,15% oregano) was analyzed. Values of body weight gain, feed intake, feed conversion ratio (FCR), intestinal villi length, and Lieberkühn crypt depth were evaluated using ANOVA and Tukey tests. The presence of intramuscular fat was determined by hyperspectral imaging. Statistically significant differences were found compared to control T0 for all three treatments in body weight gain and FCR (body weight gain 516.12 g, FCR of 2.844), but no differences were found between treatments containing oregano. Intestinal morphometry showed better results in T1 (0.05% oregano) with significant differences compared to control T0 and treatments T2 and T3 in the jejunum and ileum segments (villus length of 669.23 and 672.58 μm, Lieberkühn crypt depth of 175.46 and 200.38 μm). These results suggest that the oregano concentration in T1 could promote better intestinal health in terms of nutrient absorption and protection. Finally, hyperspectral images showed a positive relationship between meat fat percentage (T0: 0.19%, T1: 3.28%, T2: 2.19%, and T3: 1.32% fat) and oregano concentration in the diet.
