The objective sought in the present investigation was to determine the influence of residence time and current density on the percentage of total iron removal from an artificial acid solution, through the electrocoagulation process. The methodology used addressed physical-chemical aspects, such as the characterization of the effluent (pH and total iron concentration) and one of the sludge formed after the aforementioned process (Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR)), the quantification of total iron It was carried out by determining the calibration curve and its equation (UV-visible spectrophotometry). The experimental design, of an explanatory and quantitative nature, considered three levels of residence time (40, 80 and 120 minutes) and three current densities (16 mA/cm2, 33 mA/cm2 and 49 mA/cm2). The results obtained and their statistical analyzes indicate significant variations in the total iron removal capacity according to the levels of the independent variables used (time and current density). From the results of the experimental sequence we can conclude that both the residence time and the current density applied in the electrocoagulation process significantly influenced the percentage of removal of total cationic iron present in the artificial acid solutions. The trend reported between the study variables evaluated was direct, that is, the longer the residence time and the higher current densities used, the percentages of cationic reduction of iron were higher, in this way the maximum removal percentage of 99.80% was achieved (49 mA/cm2 and 120 minutes). The most significant independent variable in the electrocoagulation process developed was the current density, since the increase in this generates strong changes in terms of iron removal percentages as seen in the figures in the results chapter. The characterized sludge products indicate the presence of iron hydroxide, as evidenced in the respective FTIR spectrum.
