ABSTRACT The objective of this review is to provide sufficient information to consumers about the magnesium intake importance in human diet, affine they can take adequate intake and use of this mineral. Magnesium (Mg), is very important in metabolic functioning of our body since it is the second intracellular cation most abundant and one of its main functions It is to be a critical cofactor in any reaction involving ATP. Hypomagnesemia is due to a lack of magnesium in the diet and chronic alcohol consumption. Magnesium deficiency increases the risk of some diseases, such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension and arteriosclerosis. Moreover, Hypermagnesemia is due to a massive input of magnesium into the extracellular fluid (exceeding the physiological ability to excrete large this cation) or a marked impairment of renal function abnormalities occurring as nausea, diarrhea, abdominal cramps, Addison's disease, chromic nephritis and death. Also adequate intake of magnesium prevents many diseases as the central nervous system, migraines, cardiovascular disease, aging and type 2 diabete.
