ABSTRACT The objective of the present study was to evaluate the antibacterial activity of the hydroalcoholic extract of the leaves of Smallanthus glabratus (DC.) H. Rob. against Bacillus subtilis and Pseudomonas alcaliphila. From the leaves, collected in Otuzco – La Libertad, the extract was prepared with 50% ethanol. Then, the antibacterial activity was evaluated by the disk diffusion and microdilution method against Bacillus subtilis and Pseudomonas alcaliphila. In disk diffusion, five quantities (5 mg; 2,5 mg; 1mg; 0,5 mg y 0,25 mg) of the extract were used, obtaining inhibition zones between 7 to 8 mm (p < 0,05) and 10,7 to 25, 3 mm (p<0,05) against B. subtilis and P. alcaliphila, respectively. Minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) of 0,0146 mg/mL (Bacillus subtilis) and 0,012 mg/mL (Pseudomonas alcaliphila) and minimum bactericidal concentrations (MBC) of 0,0586 μg/μL and 0,023 μg/L were found. μL for Bacillus subtilis and Pseudomonas alcaliphila, respectively. From these findings, it was determined that the extract presented bacteriostatic activity against Bacillus subtilis and bactericidal activity against Pseudomonas alcaliphila. It is concluded that the leaves of S. glabratus (DC.) H. Rob. They present antibacterial activity, and may constitute an alternative in the traditional medicine of Otuzco.
