In the present study, how much influences the artificial anaerobic wetlands retention time in the iron (Fe) concentration, total solids and pH for mine acid drainage treatment is determined; with this investigation, among other things, it searched for determine the optimal time in what produces the maximum iron removal, as well as the optimal time for the mine acid drainage neutralization and for minimize the total solids concentration. A laboratory level artificial wetland was constructed and all the conditions for favoring the anaerobic process was created adding a limestone layer and another of organic matter, essentials for the neutrality of the water. Working with water drained from Alto Chicama coal mine which has a pH of 3.2, an iron concentration of 31.75 mg/L and a total solids percentage of 830.9 mg/L. An statistical analysis of the data with SPSS statistics was considered, for regular periods of time of 12 hours for each sample, obtaining at 0.5 days a 95.68% of iron removing and at 1.0 days the removal increase to a 97.64%, reaching a result of 0.75 mg/L of iron; that amount is considered optimal as it allows be below to the maximum permissible limit in order to permit the water be used in works like agriculture. With respect to pH, completed treatment on day 1, water at pH 7.6 and neutralized total solids concentration of 210.2 mg / L is obtained after 3.5 days of treatment. Data which are optimal for the water to be used in activities such as agriculture.
