Caesalpinia spinosa "tara" is a native of Peru natural resource used in the agro-food industry, however, is widely used in folk medicine for its anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. In this sense, this research aims to determine the cytotoxic and genotoxic effects of aqueous extract of the pericarp of C. spinosa in meristematic cells of Allium cepa. For this purpose, rooted in A. cepa bulbs 10 treatments of 0%, 0.42%, 0.83%, 1.25% and 1.67% for 8 to 24 hours in a completely random nested design were presented and stained was performed, prepared cytological count of approximately 3000 cells, then calculating the index Phases (IF), Mitotic (IM) and nuclear alterations. Data were processed by analysis of variance and mean. The results showed statistically significant reduction in all treatments IM relative to the control, significantly stressing treatments 0.42% for 8 hours. These observations may be due to compounds with tannic cell cycle inhibitory properties. Therefore, the aqueous extract of the pericarp of the C. spinosa mitotic index decreases in meristematic cells of A. cepa, tested at the concentrations and times.
