ABSTRACT Access to generic drugs for the prevention and treatment of the most prevalent diseases is one of the greatest challenges facing the governments of developing countries, but the population's perceptions of the quality of generic drugs also play a role. Objective. To determine the perception of the quality of generic drugs in the population of Huanchaco. Method. A cross-sectional descriptive study was carried out in which 143 residents of Huanchaco living near different private pharmacies were interviewed. A questionnaire was used for data collection, which was applied by means of a survey. Three variables were evaluated to define the concept of perception of the quality of generic drugs: sociodemographic, economic, and perception of quality using the Likert scale. Results. Sixty percent of those surveyed were between 22 and 40 years of age, 53% were women, 35% had a high school education and 67% had a regular economic situation. The results obtained show that there are still negative concepts and little acceptance of generic drugs among the Peruvian population. Conclusions. The perception of the population was negative about generic medicines. Access to medicines programs should systematically invest in information on the quality of medicines and develop strategies to build trust in the care provided by public health services.
