Hardness measurements in mechanical construction components produce superficial plastic deformation in the material that puts its service cycle at risk, this property is closely linked to the microstructural characteristics of the material, which requires alternative methods of a non- destructive nature that allow predicting the mechanical properties of a material. The objective of the experimental work was to determine the effect of structures modified microstructurally by heat treatments of quenching and tempering in a mechanical construction steel on its ultrasonic parameters. Six experimental runs were carried out in an electric furnace by varying the quenching temperature with three factors and tempering with two factors. The quenching samples were cooled in water for subsequent tempering. The samples were characterized by metallographic, ultrasonic and hardness tests. The hardness measurements increased as the presence of martensitic structures in the samples increased, producing a decrease in the speed and attenuation of the beam. The structures tempered at 650 0C present a higher degree of transformation, compared to those tempered at 550 0C, the morphological change is notorious, which contrasts well by decreasing the resistance to indentation and the propagation of ultrasound with respect to its initial tempering condition.
