ABSTRACT The aim of this review is to provide sufficient information on the macroscopic algae found in the Peruvian coast and have scientific and industrial importance. The seaweeds are plants whose body is represented by a talo (organisms without vascularization). They are mostly benthic, ie live attached to a substrate. They are autotrophic, which means that perform photosynthesis. The estimate of biomass in macroalgae is of interest to many disciplines and used in different ways. For ecologists is a measure of resource available to agencies other trophic levels; for those interested in its economic importance or the total biomass of certain genres, provides information on the profitability of the exploitation of that resource. In Peru, seaweeds are exported and used as raw materials in industry alginates, carrageenan and agar; and to a lesser extent, consumed as human food. Over the past decade, the growing economic importance of these resources has led to increasing levels of exploitation.
