This research aims to establish the relationship between the level of basic knowledge about drugs, education and self-medication in patients in the Hospital La Caleta de Chimbote. The research was descriptive and applied level. The method and research design was descriptive because it sought the partnership between the three variables of the study: Level of knowledge about drugs, education and self-medication. The population consisted of patients treated at the Hospital La Caleta de Chimbote while sampling was probabilistic Simple Random taking a sample of 400 patients calculated using formula for qualitative variables and finite population because we had the exact data of patients seen per month. The instrument to collect data was a survey of experts on trial for approval before implementation. The statistic used was descriptive and inferential using the Chi-square test for hypothesis testing. The data were processed with the SPSS statistical package, with a confidence level of p <0.05. The results were that the level of knowledge is at an average level in 62.7% of the sample. As for the level of education, 50.2% has a high school degree; with respect to self-medication found that 51.2% sometimes self-medicate i.e. 205 patients and 19.8% represented by 79 patients always self-medicate. Finally, it is concluded that the lower the level of knowledge about self-medication drugs is greater in patients in the Hospital La Caleta of Chimbote, it has also been found that more education is less self-medication in patients.
