This research explored the perception of motivation and transformational leadership in teachers of a subject of the Diploma program of the International Baccalaureate Organization in a private educational institution. A qualitative methodology of phenomenological design was used, which called men and women hired by the institution studied. The sampling was non-probabilistic homogeneous. 50 teachers between 24 and 65 years old participated, with an employment relationship with the institution of more than one year. A semi-structured interview and a focus group guide based on the studies by Ryan and Deci (2000) and Bass and Avolio (2006) on motivation and transformational leadership, respectively, were used. The results indicated that it was possible to understand the perception of teaching motivation and transformational leadership applied in the institution. The findings allowed the identification of 11 emerging categories that served as support for the interpretation of the results, which contributed to the educational institution to review and to rethink the impact of its leadership on the motivation of teachers, affecting their daily work, interaction with the educational community and results of standardized assessments worldwide that the Diploma program requires. Additionally, the results showed that teachers expect individualized recognition from their leaders and wish to contribute to institutional change and improvements, while leaders must build relationships based on trust and effective collaboration with the staff. Finally, the implications were discussed and recommendations were provided.
