The purpose of this research was to establish the relationship between mental calculation and the resolution of mathematical problems in second grade students of public educational institutions. The research design was non-experimental correlational transversal - not bivariate causal. Census sampling was used. The sample consisted of 225 male and female students attending the second grade of primary education in three public educational institutions in the district of Villa María del Triunfo. The Mathematical Problem Resolution Test (PROBLEMATIC) and the Mental Calculation Exercise Battery (CALCUMATIC) built by the authors were applied. In the results, it was found that there is a positive and statistically significant relationship between both variables, concluding that at a greater ability to calculate there is a greater ability to solve problems. The implications of the results have been discussed.
