Body image dissatisfaction appears due to the preference to change certain parts of the body, and to avoid negative judgments. Likewise, in the need for social approval, an excessively positive image is shown in order to be accepted, voluntarily demonstrating a distorted image of themselves. Therefore, this research sought to determine the relationship between body image dissatisfaction and the need for social approval and specifically to identify the levels of body image dissatisfaction; and those of need for social approval; as well as, the differences in the dimensions body dissatisfaction and social desirability, according to sociodemographic variables (age, academic cycle, career, and nutritional assistance); and finally, to identify the relationship between the dimensions mentioned above, in 103 female health students aged 18 to 27 years (M= 20.84; SD=1.87) from a university in Chiclayo. The study has a quantitative approach, non-experimental design of correlational-comparative type. Through the Body Shape Questionnaire (BSQ 14) and the Marlow and Crowne Social Desirability Scale - short version, which was adapted to the context of Chiclayo with a reliability of 0.897; the results showed a negative relationship between the study variables and by dimensions; also, medium levels of body image dissatisfaction and need for social approval; and that there are no significant differences between body dissatisfaction and social desirability according to sociodemographic variables. In conclusion, the higher body image dissatisfaction, the lower need for social approval.
