A curcumin-selective molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) was synthesized by bulk polymerization using curcumin as template, acrylamide (AM) as functional monomer, ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) as structural monomer, ABCV as initiating radical, and acetonitrile as porogen solvent. The polymer was washed with a mixture of methanol:acetic acid in proportions 7:3 and 9:1, to remove the curcumin. The FT-IR spectra for MIP and NIP were similar, and presented characteristic peaks of EGDMA at 1722 and 1143 cm-1 of the C=O and C-O bonds, respectively. The TGA reflected the stability of the polymer up to 240°C in an inert atmosphere. The surface analysis indicated a greater BET surface area in the MIP (28.5 m2 g-1) compared to the NIP (18.5 m2 g-1). In the adsorption study using UV-Vis spectrophotometry, the optimal parameters were obtained: 60 minutes (interaction time), 2 mg (mass of adsorbent), 20 mg L-1 (adsorbate concentration) and methanol-buffer mixture (at pH 6). The adsorption kinetics were pseudo-second order with a value of Qe =16.2 mg g-1 (R2 = 0.999) similar to the experimental one; and the adsorption process was adjusted to the Freundlich model with 1/n = 0.61 and Kf =1.96 for the MIP. The selectivity study provided a separation factor (a) of 15.8, the printing factor (I) of 1.63 and the specific selectivity factor of 1.56, indicating good selectivity of the MIP against interferents. Tests on real food samples showed recovery percentages greater than 70%.
