Recovered water pumping systems in mining units present a risk of failure in water hammer event. This generates limited availability of recovered water that is used in mining processes. The effects of water hammer manifest as failures in pipes and the equipment in the impulsion line, for this reason it is a priority to ensure the integrity of the pumping system through an adequate selection of safety valves that mitigate water hammer effects. The current research includes design of an evolutionary algorithm for adequate selection of safety valves and their improvement in the protection against water hammer in recovered water pumping systems in mining units. It begins with the collection of data for the development of a hydraulic model and initial selection of safety valves is also included. Next, the design of the evolutionary algorithm and its evaluation are carried out to find optimized parameters for safety valves. Finally, comparison of the pumping system protection is made, before the simulation of a water hammer event, in two scenarios: pumping system with initial selection of safety valves and pumping system with optimized selection of safety valves. through the evolutionary algorithm.
