The objective of this study was to implement a preventive maintenance plan (PMP) to improve the efficiency of a bus fleet in a national interprovincial land transport company. We initially considered 132 Scania and Volvo buses that were in operation during 2018, and classified them by type of service, make, model and year of operation. Subsequently, the 14 buses of the Volvo - B430R make and model with the lowest fuel efficiency (9.73 km/gal) were selected as the sample for the present study. The research methodology was applied, explanatory in scope, with a quantitative approach and a pre-experimental longitudinal design. The instruments used to obtain data on the maintenance indicators were the record cards of the fleet management software and the analysis reports of lubricating oil samples, which were sent by the laboratory of the bus manufacturer's representative. In relation to the deficiencies identified in the initial diagnosis, it was established to improve the efficiency of the fleet, for which the present study was divided into 3 dimensions: fuel efficiency, mechanical availability and soot levels in the lubricating oil. For these 3 dimensions, a statistical and economic analysis was considered. As such, after implementation, the PMP was found and demonstrated to improve fuel efficiency and mechanical availability by 8.4% and 6.6%, respectively. Additionally, soot levels showed a reduction of 17.1%. In conclusion, the implementation of a PMP had a favourable impact on the maintenance management of the interprovincial land transport company considered, because it significantly improved the efficiency of the fleet of the 14 selected buses, which represented a total average annual saving of 137,318 soles (3.8% compared to the period prior to the implementation of the PMP).
