This research work was developed with the objective of proposing the redesign of the air conditioning system of a rack room in order to reduce the operation and maintenance costs. The rack rooms, a facility that houses computer systems and related components, are considered critical facilities for the performance of the operating units of a refinery. Air conditioning plays a fundamental role in ensuring conditions of temperature, humidity and control of pollutants in the air for rack rooms. These conditions are essential for data centers that require electronic equipment to avoid failures due to overheating, as they operate 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Electronic equipment exposed to high temperatures or high temperature gradients can suffer thermal failures, especially when repeatedly exposed to such high temperature gradients. When a rack fails, it means shutting down the operating unit connected to the rack, each interruption in service usually means a loss of revenue of thousands or even millions of soles for the company due to inactivity, for this reason the rack room is considered a critical installation. Air conditioning systems account for approximately 40% of the facility's energy consumption, however air conditioning energy consumption can be as low as 21% for a more efficient system and 61% for a less efficient system. Redesign is based on proper calculation of heat load and selection of a more efficient air conditioning system that will provide a reduction in operating and maintenance costs.
