The design and construction of large cyclone tailings dams has become more frequent in recent years, even in seismically active regions such as the case study located in Arequipa-Peru. Throughout the world there are several tailings dams that report maximum heights of 250 m, such as: Peru and Chile. One of the most economical construction methods for tailings dams is the so-called upstream construction method, since a minimal amount of sand is used compared to other methods such as the centerline method and downstream. However, the first method represents the riskiest type of construction in terms of physical stability. This thesis presents the geotechnical characterization of a 165-meter-high cyclonic sand dam located in a highly seismic region. Comparative analysis is based on an extensive program of laboratory tests including: granulometry by sieving and hydrometer, Atterberg limits, moisture content, specific gravity, density, saturated/unsaturated hydraulic conductivity, modified proctor, standard proctor, consolidated undrained triaxials (CU) and consolidated drained (CD). Finally, this research details a comparative analysis (slope stability, seepage, water management and costs) of the construction methods of cycloneized sand tailings dams: centerline method and downstream method. Given that, considering the catastrophic events that have occurred in recent years, these structures (tailings dams with the centerline and downstream construction method) are most likely the only ones allowed in the regulations and standards in the world. The results obtained have allowed us to compare and analyze the construction methods downstream and center line of a high-altitude cyclone tailings dam with the safety factors obtained with the limit equilibrium method, with the analysis of seepage in the body of the dam of tailings, water management and costs in both case studies.
