In this thesis a methodology for the design of a cascade H-bridge multilevel converter controlled by space vector modulation technique and applied to reactive power compensation is presented, criteria for sizing main components of converter power stage and choosing constants for controllers which are part of converter control scheme are presented. The proposed methodology is applied to implement a converter computational model using software Simulink, this way, supporting calculation for sizing main components of power stage and choosing constants for controllers are performed. Once the computational model is achieved, Simulink is used to analyze the converter dynamics performance, external disturbance and reference changes are applied in the available control modes. In all the cases analyzed, variables such as current distortion level, response times, capacitor voltages ripple level, settling times and maximum overshoot are monitored.
