The conservation of healthy marine ecosystems not only requires constant monitoring and follow-up of the activities of the fishing fleets at sea but also the knowledge of the strategies of the fishermen in order to obtain a management of the fisheries, that is based on the ecosystem approach. Therefore, the main objective of the present work was to characterize the spatial behavior and effort of the industrial purse seine fleet of anchovy (Engraulis ringens) in the period from 2000 to 2009, through of the application of our clustering proposal, which considers the challenges addressed by the hierarchical and non-hierarchical clustering methods. For this, information was available on the fishing effort carried out in each of the activities of a fishing trip, inferred from the knowledge of the activities of one percent of the total trips of the industrial purse-seine fleet in the period mentioned. This allowed us, in a first phase, to carry out the univariate analysis, then the reduction of dimensionality by the Principal Component Analysis to finally characterize the spatial behavior and fishing effort at the travel scale. The application of a clustering technique, made it possible to interpret the dynamics of the fishing fleet. This method in other works was used for the grouping of variables in order to detect spatial and seasonal patterns, which allow the detection of protected areas. In the present investigation, mixed clustering was used to characterize the behavior of the industrial purse seine fleet of anchovy. The results of this study revealed six fishing strategies.
