In this thesis a long life-time two-stage single-phase DC-AC converter applied to the control of electrical microgrids is described. The DC-AC converter consists of a dual active bridge series-resonant (DABSR) converter cascaded with a voltage source inverter (VSI). Most two-stage DC-AC converters use a bank of electrolytic capacitors between both stages to attenuate the voltage ripple on the DC-link due to the power imbalance between the input that supplies DC power and output with time-varying power. This type of capacitor limits the useful life-time and the operating temperature range of the converter. Also, they are bulky and heavy. In this thesis the replacement of electrolytic capacitors by film capacitors on the DC-link to overcome those disadvantages is proposed. This replacement leads to operating the converter with a high voltage ripple of 120Hz on the DC-link. In order to decouple this ripple on the DC-DC stage, the duty ratio modulation technique is used. While, in the DC-AC stage, this ripple is attenuate by means of a Notch filter on the DC-link voltage feedback. Also, a resonant component tuned in 180Hz is added in the current controller to decrease the total harmonic distortion (THD) of the AC current. The behavior of two 500W converters using the two types of capacitors, both connected to the grid and powered by a photovoltaic panel, are simulated in PSIM® software. When comparing the performance of both designed converters, the effectiveness or the converter designed with film capacitor is verified, reaching an efficiency of 97.5% and a THD of 1.1%.
