The objective of this research work is the hydraulic analysis of a tailings transport system through the use of piston-diaphragm pumps to reduce energy consumption. The growth of mining and the generation of greater volumes of tailings requires transporting longer and longer distances to unloading in a warehouse. In turn, it is also required to transport the tailings with the least amount of water and/or higher concentration of solids possible, because it is a very valuable and scarce resource. This premise creates an inconvenience due to because conventional equipment for transporting tailings (pumps centrifuges) have limited capacity, mainly due to their low drive capacity which causes the requirement of greater quantities of pumps and pumping stations (Booster Station). The use of diaphragm piston pumps represents a great advantage for the transportation of thickened tailings over long distances due to high pressure of discharge they reach, greater efficiency and lower operating cost (lower energy consumption) compared to centrifugal pumps, despite a higher initial investment cost, which, in a given period of operation, the investment is recovered.
