The present work is based on the synthesis and characterization of hybrid oxide thin films of CuO and α-Fe2O3 that form nano-heterostructures supported on conductive substrates, fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) glass. The arrangement of the oxides and their thickness was modified in the synthesis of the nano-heterostructures for further study. The oxides were obtained by the simple Sol-Gel method using the immersion technique, Dip-Coating. The samples were characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) which confirmed the successful synthesis of CuO (tenorite) and α-Fe2O3 (hematite). Atomic force microscopy (AFM) provided great information on the growth of α-Fe2O3 crystals in the heterostructure with pointed-conical surface morphology. On the other hand, the frontal and cross-sectional images visualized by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) confirms the particle size and the well-defined formation of the CuO and α-Fe2O3 layers. The optimum band gap energy of the heterostructures was measured by UV-Vis spectroscopy using diffuse reflectance (DRS), with values ranging from 1.41 to 2.15 eV. Photoluminescent (PL) analysis revealed an improvement in the separation and speed of transfer of electrons and photogenerated holes in the heterostructures. Removal of arsenic from aqueous solution was achieved through direct absorption of As(III) and photooxidation to As (V), a removal efficiency of As (III) of 85% and a final concentration of As (V) below 8ppb were reached. Better efficiency of the removal of As (III) was obtained for the fabricated heterostructures compared to the pristine oxides. Finally, it is shown that the adsorption kinetics of As (III) is perfectly adjusted to chemisorption and physisorption processes (R2 greater than 0.9).
