In the current research work, the electrical protection system of medium voltage induction motors was analyzed to increase the production capacity of a crushing plant. Settings of thermal capacity used, unbalance bias and hot cold safe stall ratio were analyzed; important components of the thermal model used by relays for the protection of electric motors. In addition, the appropriate overload curve was analyzed and selected to protect the motor, considering that it does not exceed the thermal limits of the motor and that it allows the motors to start without failure. Coordination of the relay protection settings between the motor protection relay and the main relay of the motor control center, in the case of phase and ground faults, was also analyzed; to prevent false trips when starting motors; all this using the ETAP 16.0 electrical system analysis software. In addition, other functions were analyzed, such as mechanical jam and time between starts, important to avoid long waiting times for another motor start, as well as protection against short circuits, undercurrent and undervoltage. Finally, the impact of the parameter modifications on the increase in the production capacity of the crushing plant was analyzed, comparing the number of failures before and after the changes.
