Planning is a key factor for the successful completion of construction, it consists of define the scope, refine the objectives and identify activities, methods and resources before action to determine effective ways to achieve the proposed objectives. In the efforts of contractor companies to plan the construction phase of industrial plants, multidisciplinary teams from all knowledge areas of the project are involved; the information to complete them is traditionally extracted from construction 2D drawings manually, therefore, it is prone to human misinterpretation, and is time consuming. The emergence of Building Information Modeling (BIM) promises to develop planning from a new perspective, through a single and centralized model that allows the virtual construction of all the elements of the building with data attributes for analysis, sequencing and exploration before its physical construction. Despise the BIM benefits are widely disseminated, in Lima-Peru only 5% of the buildings were used in the construction stage during 2017. One of the main barriers for its implementation is the perception in the managers contractor companies that implementation costs are high compared to traditional methods. In the study, a method has been proposed to identify and estimate the variation of planning costs when implementing BIM in traditional management methods. For its elaboration, first of all, the bibliographic review of the necessary concepts on project management, planning, BIM methodologies and implementation costs was carried out, through the judgment of experts, a reference framework was established for the type of information delivered by the clients to the contractor companies; then, with the study of the project documents, the planning processes were defined to provide the guidelines for selecting BIM tools and estimating their impact on planning costs. The method was proposed in the context of a real construction project of a complex industrial plant, in charge of carrying out the primary crushing process in a copper concentrator plant. The analysis of the tangible impacts demonstrates the profitability of the introduction of BIM due to the savings in personnel costs, in addition, the intangible impacts directly attributable to planning with BIM are characterized. This research contributes to the objective understanding of the impacts of BIM in construction planning and how beneficial it can be for the contractors executing the works.
