The theses’ objective is to identify and design a cascade system of small and mini hydroelectric plants, along the 63.3 km of water conduction pipes to the Lomas de Ilo irrigation project. The thesis is based on the study “Ampliación de la Frontera Agrícola Lomas de Ilo – Moquegua“, which is part of the Pasto Grande project. The conduction system goes through two parallel pipes, with an unevenness of approximately 716 m on the whole system. It is identified that it is possible to generate hydroelectric energy by taking advantage of said unevenness to give the project greater value. Throughout the development of the parallel pipelines, suitable zones were identified to locate three small hydroelectric plants. Two design alternatives were studied. In alternative N° 1, the pipes in parallel each reach its own turbine, working independently. In alternative N° 2, the pipes in parallel are joined at the arrival of the powerhouse, connecting to a single turbine. Through an economic evaluation study, it was found that alternative number 2 was the most viable. Based on this alternative, the CH-3 powerhouse was designed, which has a power of 2.08 MW and also has the best economic data. With a parametric budget of 1,795,904.38 USD, a risk value of 3,532,087.84, an internal rate of return (IRR) of 34.88 %, a cost-benefit of 2.51 and an average energy cost of 8.44 MWh. An adequate verification of the effects of the water hammer phenomenon due to turbine shutdown was made to the CH-3 pipeline; then, a budget was finally drawn up.
