The development of a preventive and predictive maintenance plan for the transformers of a semi-autogenous mill (SAG) with cycle converter drive aims to ensure reliability during its life cycle and guarantee the budgeted annual availability of a copper concentrate plant. These maintenance plans are based on the study of its main components, an analysis of its failure modes and effects (FEMEA) and the analysis of optimal maintenance frequency from statistical studies of failures occurred in 40 transformers installed in different mining units between 2014 and 2020, considering the costs for preventive, predictive and corrective maintenance. To define the maintenance strategies, all possible modes, effects, and consequences of their failures reviewed in manufacturers' manuals and studies currently conducted were thoroughly reviewed to then establish the short-, medium- and long-term actions, which are translated into maintenance tasks. Subsequently, to establish the frequency of maintenance tasks identified in the AMEF, statistical studies of the failures of the main components of the power transformer were analyzed to finally determine the optimum frequency of intervention, which is related to the corrective maintenance costs and the economic impact due to unavailability.
