The research evaluates the implementation of an aerobic selector, located at the head of the main aeration tank, and its effect on reducing the number of sludge filaments and the quality of sedimentation. 02 complete mixing activated sludge systems were installed on a laboratory scale, in which one system had the selector installed at the head of the reactor and the other did not; Both systems had a recirculation line and secondary settlers, they were operated in parallel and under the same aeration and flow conditions (259.2 L/d). The investigation was developed in 6 stages, the first stage consisted of the start- up of the reactors, in this stage only the activated sludge reactors were operated, during the second stage the systems operated with the secondary settlers and the sludge was also recirculated, in in the third stage, the selector was installed in system No. 1; and during the fourth, fifth and sixth stages the recirculation rates were varied to 50%, 60% and 70% respectively. The parameters evaluated were BOD5 (total and soluble), SVI, mass load (F/M), SST, SSV, dissolved oxygen, pH, turbidity, temperature and conductivity. After the installation of the selector, the SVI of system N ° 1 was reduced by 39.66% with respect to system N ° 2 (which did not have the selector), however, it was not possible to obtain a value lower than 150 ml/g, except during stage 6 (R = 70%). Likewise, it was observed that the amount of filamentous bacteria was also reduced to an occasional quantity after the installation of the selector, while, without this unit, the amount of filaments was abundant. It was also observed that at a higher recirculation rate, SVI values and the amount of filamentous microorganisms in the sludge could be reduced. On the other hand, it was also found that, after the installation of the aerobic selector at the head of the R1 reactor, microbubbles are observed in the settler.
