The thermal performance in the production of zinc oxide, through the indirect or french method, depends on several variables, which, if not in process control, generate losses in the financial statements of metallurgical companies. One of these various variables is the life time of the graphite crucibles installed in the smelting furnaces. The present investigation had the objective of determining the optimal life time of graphite crucibles to improve the thermal performance in the production of zinc oxide, for this purpose the influence of the life time of crucibles in the process was technically analyzed after to collect data on natural gas consumption, as fuel, crucible life times, and zinc oxide production weights. The information collected and analyzed confirmed a direct relationship influence between the life time of the crucibles and the consumption of natural gas, that is, the longer the crucibles life, the greater the fuel consumption; and the shorter the life of the crucibles, the lower the fuel consumption. Likewise, in terms of thermal performance, an inverse relationship influence was concluded, that is, the longer the crucibles life time, the lower the thermal performance; and the shorter the life of the crucibles, the higher the thermal performance. Finally, after the analysis and discussions, the optimal life time of the graphite crucibles was determined to improve the thermal performance in the production of zinc oxide.
