In this research thesis, the conversion of total nitrogen, the removal of organic matter and the monitoring of the physical parameters of the domestic wastewater treated in two third-generation DHS (Downflow Hanging Sponge) reactors were evaluated in parallel. For the evaluation of the DHS reactor, the effluent from a UASB reactor was used in a first period and from a UASB reactor - Septic Tank in a second period. They were evaluated for a time of 54 weeks (379 days) with a theoretical hydraulic retention time of 2 hours and 5 minutes and a theoretical inflow flow of 43.2 L/day, for each DHS reactor. The frame of both DHS reactors had two columns of sponge support medium. The distance between the columns of the support medium was 10 cm for each DHS reactor to allow the entry of air from the outside. The sponges were covered by a polypropylene backing to create a protective barrier. The results obtained in the DHS 1 reactor indicate that the average conversion of ammonia nitrogen was 72 % and the removal efficiency of BOD5 was 82 % in the first stage, and the average conversion of ammonia nitrogen was 81 % and the removal efficiency removal of BOD5 was 88 % in the second stage, while for the DHS 2 reactor they indicate that the average conversion of ammonia nitrogen was 60 % and the removal efficiency of BOD5 was 83 % in the first stage, and the conversion average ammonia nitrogen was 63 % and the removal efficiency of BOD5 was 95 % in the second stage. In the nitrification process, the concentration of nitrates in the effluents from the settlers was in the range between 27.1 mg NO3- N/L and 31.5 mg NO3-N/L in the first stage, and between 31 mg NO3-N/L and 32.8 mg NO3-N/L in the second stage. In both reactors, total nitrogen was reduced in the range of 67.1 mg N/L and 66.3 mg N/L to 43.55 mg N/L and 50.45 mg N/L. Nitrification and anammox processes occurred in both reactors. The sludge production rate during the first stage in settler 1 and settler 2 was 0.183 L/month and 0.400 L/month, respectively. The sludge production rate during the second stage in settler 1 and settler 2 was 0.706 L/month and 0.483 L/month, respectively.
