Reinforced concrete structures in seismic zones, in effect, during an earthquake, may develop lateral displacement demands that lead the main reinforcing bars to random cyclic deformation histories, which lead them into the inelastic behavior range, and premature buckling of these bars may also occur. To determine the performance of reinforced concrete structures, in seismic zones, it is required to properly simulate the reversible cyclic behavior of the reinforcing steel by means of a suitable constitutive model. Several constituent models for reinforcing steel have been developed. Of the existing models, none take into account the effect of the carbon content in the Bauschinger curves. Some conceptually simple and numerically efficient models do not accurately capture the reversible cyclic response and ignore the buckling failure mode, and, some refined models that attempt to predict the inelastic buckling failure mode tend to lead to numerical convergence problems. The objective of this thesis is the formulation and implementation of a precise and computationally efficient constitutive model for reinforcing steel under reversible cyclic loads considering the buckling failure mode from its monotonic behavior to traction and is the implementation of an algorithm. A model available in the literature, capable of capturing the reversible cyclic response of the reinforcing steel in the absence of buckling and rupture, was used. The model is improved by modifying the distribution of the deformations in the Bauschinger curve by a logarithmic distribution, this because the greatest variation of stresses is in the initial zone of this curve, also the numerical method was modified to warranty the convergence and a factor that depends on the carbon content was implemented to modify the Bauschinger curve. In addition, the proposed model captures the buckling deformation and the amount of hysteretic energy dissipated. The accuracy of the proposed model and the efficiency of the implemented algorithm are validated by comparison with experimental results.
