High voltage substations play a fundamental role in the interconnection of transmission and distribution electrical systems, allowing to raise or lower voltage levels, maneuver circuits, clear faults and compensate loads. The availability of the circuits associated with a substation is constantly monitored by the companies and supervisory bodies; a failure in its system implies the interruption of the electrical service to customers, damage to the health of workers, damage to components and damage to the institutional image. Keeping the equipment in optimal conditions increases the reliability of the operation, the availability of the circuits and the safety of the personnel working inside them, however, this task demands a great deployment of human and financial resources. Within substation maintenance, one of the most important activities is power washing. Its application requires improvement in the task, risk analysis and evaluation of the period between washings. The current research is based on the study of the behavior of partial discharges produced in contaminated insulators of 60 kV substations. In its development, the use of ultraviolet measurement technology is highlighted, values are correlated and patterns are analyzed, with the standards of international institutions and recommendations of previous research results, to obtain a new criterion for the evaluation of the severity of partial discharges in high voltage insulators. Finally, from the results obtained, a power washing plan is defined, which reduces the costs associated to such activity, serving as a model to improve the maintenance planning of high voltage substations.
