The electricity generation market in Peru allows companies to sell the energy they produce at the spot price in the short-term market operated by the System's Economic Operation Committee (COES). The sale of this production is valued at marginal cost; however, this price is very volatile due to various factors: the demand to be covered, the hydrological uncertainty, among others, this causes that the economic flow obtained from the sale to the spot does not is stable representing an economic risk since it does not guarantee that the total costs of the plants will be covered. For this reason, generators find it necessary to commit part of that production in forward contracts to generate a constant income and an additional margin that improves their economic results. In this sense, these companies use various market risk analysis tools that will allow them to manage and define their optimal sales strategy. In this research, market risk methodologies are evaluated to mitigate the exposure to this risk and improve the margin in the sale of energy from power plants.
