Nowadays, seismic analysis and geotechnical design of mining facilities, such as mine waste dumps and heap leach pads, located at highly active seismic zones, require a proper determination of the dynamic properties of the materials that will be stacked on them, such as mine waste and leached ROM ore, in order to assess the seismic stability of these facilities. However, in despite of the seismic design importance of those facilities, currently the references about dynamic properties of these materials are very limited or inexistent due to lack of research and laboratory testing on those materials. Shear modulus and damping ratio are two of the most important soil dynamic parameters in seismic response analysis of geotechnical structures, moreover, many authors agree that these properties are nonlinear and strain-dependent. Therefore, curves of normalized shear modulus degradation and increment of damping ratio with shear strain are commonly used to model these features. This study presents laboratory research of the strain-dependent dynamic properties of mine waste and leached ROM ore of current Peruvian mining operations. Mine waste and leached ROM ore samples were reconstituted in laboratory using the parallel or homothetic gradation technique. The materials were evaluated at the University of Texas at Austin using a combined resonant column and torsional shear (RCTS) and cyclic-triaxial equipment, getting the normalized shear modulus and damping ratio as a function of the shear strain amplitude were obtained. Based on the laboratory investigation on mine waste and leached ROM ore, statistical regression analysis and the hyperbolic model proposed by Darendeli (2001)(11) and the model proposed by Zhang et al. (2005)(66); this research proposes normalized shear modulus and damping ratio curves of mine waste and leached ROM ore materials, which can be used in preliminary seismic response analysis of mine waste dumps and heap leach pads Darendeli (2001)(11) and Menq (2003)(43) curves; the comparison shows the biggest differences for the Kobe’s response spectrum in the 50 and 100 m height columns. Finally, seismic response analysis in two columns of 50 and 100 m height is presented, using Atico, Tarapaca, Chichi and Kobe seismic records, with the purpose of comparison the response spectrum obtained using the dynamic properties proposed in this research for leach ore ROM and mine waste, and Darendeli (2001)(11) and Menq (2003)(43) curves; the comparison shows the biggest differences for the Kobe’s response spectrum in the 50 and 100 m height columns.
