The construction of tunnels has a high degree of complexity due to the uncertainties of the types of material to be excavated and the unfavorable geological factors that may occur during construction. Although there are preliminary studies before the execution of a tunneling project, sometimes these are complicated due to the coverage of the tunnel, making predictions of the quality of the material lose accuracy. This causes that during construction, material with lower quality than expected can be found and due to this it is necessary to improve the support elements, which reduces the excavation production ratio and increases construction costs. Faced with this problem, the construction method using a Single Shield TBM (Tunnel Boring Machine) emerges as an alternative. This thesis work carries out a comparative analysis of two constructive methods that are the Single Shield TBM method and the conventional method for the construction of tunnels. For this, the planning of time and cost for each method was elaborated and analyzed, taking as a constructive case the Pucará and Trasandino hydraulic tunnels belonging to the Majes Siguas II irrigation project. These tunnels have, according to its preliminary studies, a fair and good quality of rock, except in the fault zones. It also describes the tunnel construction process with Single Shield TBM, from the preliminary works to the operation of the TBM for the construction of the tunnel. Finally, with this study it is concluded that in the case of the tunnels studied, the construction by Single Shield TBM method has more benefits compared to the conventional method, obtaining as results better excavation production ratios that reduces the excavation time in 9 months (28%), however, based on the Majes Siguas II project prices, the resulting budget is higher in almost 6 million dollars (4%). Also, based on the elaborated sensitivity analysis, the single shield TBM method has a lower cost and time increase in the case of unfavorable scenarios where the quantity of poor-quality excavation material gets higher than expected.
