This research describes the numerical modeling of a tailings dam through the FLAC finite difference program with the constitutive model UBCSAND, using the Lima 1974 and Atico 2001 earthquakes adjusted spectrally to the uniform danger spectrum of the project area in 475 years return period. Geometric modeling begins with the current state of the dam to stabilize the system and obtain static deformations. Also, mechanical properties (resistance) and Flow properties (permeabilities of materials) were assigned. The coupled method was applied to achieve the combined effect of the flow in the model, that is, the direction and speed with which the flow moves and the pore pressure, which determines the effective stress of the materials. The damping equations were assigned to the materials, which is defined as the variation of the stiffnesses according to the deformation range, and the earthquake was entered, in the form of a speed record at the base of the model. The constitutive model of UBCSAND was calibrated with the curves of the simple cyclic shear test (DSS), the shear stress curve against the vertical effective stress and the shear stress curve against the shear deformation. Also, it was calibrated with the CSR curve (cyclical shear stress ratio) against the number of cycles. Among other calibrations, we had the hysteretic damping equation for the other materials where the mohr coulomb model was used. The numerical modeling allows to study the liquefaction of the tailings of the eposit by means of the parameter “Ru”, through the relation of acting stresses and resistant stresses, where the acting stress is the excess pressure of pores due to seismic movement, which generates a decrease in stress effective and loss of stiffness of the particles. In other words, it is the ratio of the excess pore pressure generated by the seismic movement against the initial vertical effective stress, which is the resistance of the soil. On the other hand, the limit equilibrium method will be compared with a rigorous analysis, such as dynamic analysis which use the finite difference method. This will verify that physical stability in terms of serviceability conditions, generates more information on stresses and deformations at control points placed at sites of interest in the dam. The results of the pseudo-static safety factor and the earthquake resulting from the limit equilibrium method will be reflected in the range of deformations obtained from the dynamic analysis. The liquefaction potential evaluation was performed using the semi-empirical method of Idriss and Boulanger (2008), comparing it with the results of the numerical analysis and concluding that the tailings of the deposit present liquefaction for the earthquakes used. The performance of the geotechnical modeling with finite differences will be compared with the semi-empirical method of Idriss and Boulanger from 2008, this will serve to weigh the use of more rigorous analyzes to carry out feasibility studies or detailed engineering. Although the empirical methods do give an initial idea about the behavior of the dam about whether there will be liquefaction in certain areas in the face of an earthquake, they do not give me information about the effect of liquefaction on the dam during and after an earthquake. This research seeks to be a technical reference for the future design of tailings dams in Peru considering rigorous analysis.
