This thesis details the design improvements in an extraction system located in a gold refinery and how these favor a decrease in the concentration of arsenic, cadmium and lead in the environment, therefore the health risk they are exposed to. workers decrease. The refinery is located at 1,250 meters above sea level. During metal smelting a furnace temperature of 1100 ° C is reached because the melting temperature of gold is 1064 ° C, resulting in an air temperature in the ducts of the extraction system of approximately 300 ° C. The chemical agents at the outlet of the extraction system are controlled with gas scrubbers, which, in addition to decreasing the concentration of gases and particulate matter, decrease the air temperature in the ducts to approximately 30 ° C. When carrying out the preliminary analysis, it was determined that the main occupational agents that workers are exposed to are noise, thermal stress, lighting, postural load, gases and metallic fumes, with exposure to the last mentioned being of very high risk. After monitoring to determine the level of quantitative exposure of workers to occupational agents, it was observed that exposure to metal fumes was not fully controlled, so improvements in engineering controls are aimed at optimizing capture of metal fumes generated in the ovens. To carry out the redesign of the extraction system at the gold refinery, the method for the design and verification of ventilation systems was recommended by the ACGIH (American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists), considering parameters from the technical data sheets of the induction furnaces. to implement. Metal smoke monitoring, which was performed according to the NIOSH 7300 analytical method, showed a high concentration of arsenic, cadmium and lead in the environment (exposure level greater than 100%), as well as the analysis of the design of the localized extraction system It showed deficiencies and measurements of its current conditions (flow and static pressure) confirmed its malfunction. After implementing improvements to the localized extraction system and changing the smelting process, the concentration of arsenic, cadmium and lead in the environment is reduced.
