The existence of LPG packing plants carries that exist control measures to reduce the inherent risk of these facilities, it means the protection of the people who works in the plant and the neighboring populations, protecting environment and continuity of plant operations. After a study of emergencies that occurred in similar plants, we propose as a control measure a fire protection system, whose design is based on NFPA standard (the standard that refers to Supreme Decree No. 027-94-EM), for a fictitious plant located in the highlands of Peru with a capacity to store LGP 15000 gallon in a stationary tank. For the design of the fire protection system is calculated the requirement of water for four hours of duration (research proposal) for this, the risk stages are analyzed for the plant proposed in order to determine the stage of maximum probable individual risk. In consequence to determine the amount of water that will be required and the flow of the fire pump; also based on the analysis of the evaluated risk, it is determined the number of cabinets and their locations in the plant, the ordering of the Water Spray Nozzles is also proposed to the stationary tank cooling system, with all above is proposed the route through the wet and dry network of the fire protection system. In order to verify if the control measure proposed to manage to decrease the inherent risk is applied the risk evaluation methodology “What if?” which consists into determine inherent risk level to be reevaluated to determine residual risk in facilities, obtaining the expected result. In addition, the economic evaluation of the project, determining that the investment is viable.
