An experimental design was used to study the effect on efficiency to detect wall corrosion in storage tanks after implementing a prototype of a mobile robot. The prototype’s development was made to substitute ultrasonic manual thickness measurement of the cylindrical body of storage tanks and thus making tank inspection safe and efficient. Test runs and thickness measurements made with the prototype were performed on a test tube built during experimental development. Likewise, final tests regarding thickness measurements with the prototype were made in a 5.8 m in diameter and 8.2 m high real tank. Results of the study confirm that ultrasonic thickness measurement using the implementation of a mobile robot prototype improves efficiency to detect wall corrosion in storage tanks, that is, performing a corrosion detection service on the body of a tank with the aid of the prototype reduces the number of man-hours when compared to the manual thickness measurements. Finally, an inspection procedure to detect wall corrosion in tanks was implemented and validated, there the use of the mobile robot prototype was specified.
