Several studies by independent specialists and international organizations indicate that there is less and less water available for human consumption. For example, the UNESCO report on the development of water resources in 2018 indicates that global water use has multiplied by six in the last 100 years (Wada, et al., 2016). The objective of the research is to reduce the content of organic matter, mainly alcohols that are present in the process waters of the company Reactivos Nacionales S.A. It is desired to reuse these waters in other processes and discharge the waters to the sewage system complying with the maximum admissible values that current legislation allows according to DS-010-2019. For this reason, the water treatment will be carried out using an advanced oxidation technique, called Electro Fenton (One of the families of this method). This method reduces the alcohol content. Alcohol will be measured by Chemical Oxygen Demand or COD. The water to be treated has been extracted from the vacuum pump circuit of the drying unit of the RENASA plant, located in the constitutional province of Callao. The advanced oxidation mechanism consists of the generation of hydroxyl radicals, which are highly oxidizing chemical species. The generation of these radicals is through the Fenton process, through the reaction of hydrogen peroxide and iron in ionic form (Fe2+). The generated hydroxyl radicals react with the alcohols present in the water. The Iron (Fe2+) or catalyst, is obtained from the oxidation of the iron anodes in the electrochemical cell. The tests are carried out in batches, with a sample volume of 5 liters. During the tests: pH, COD, turbidity and conductivity are analyzed. For a Fenton reaction to develop, the simple must have an acidic pH. Some authors recommend pH within a range of 3 and 5,5 (Chiarenzelli, Scrudato, Wunderlich, & Pagano, 2001). This is because an acidic pH allows the Fe2+ species to be stable, while at higher pH other species such as FeOH + can be formed. The tests were done using a 5-liter plexiglass container. The electrodes used are 15 cm x 13,3 cm iron plates (Fe2+) placed in the electrochemical cell at a distance of 3 cm. It has been worked with the current density values of: J1 = 45,9 A / m2; J2 = 83,5 A / m2; J3 = 121,1 A / m2. The current density directly influences the generation of Fe2+ ions, however there is no direct relationship between current density and COD removal, since it also depends on the amount of H2O2, which must be in a suitable relationship to generate the radicals *(OH). With the results obtained, a process scheme is proposed, the main equipment is indicated and the economic analysis of the operating and investment costs is carried out.
